I am extremely pleased to hear that plans to upgrade the village flood defences are going well.

The Nene Parade footpath has now opened, and work on additional railings around the footpath and cemetery is expected to be completed by Christmas. As well as being vital to the wellbeing of the area, the flood defences are also a welcome improvement to its appearance, and I would like to congratulate Middle Level Commissioners and Benwick Parish Council for all of their hard work.

Plans for the 2014 Circuit of the Fens cycle race, which will run through Benwick, are progressing. I’m sure that the event will be just as much of a success as it was this year.

Continuing with the riding theme Benwick’s first charity horse ride, held in September in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital, was a great success, raising more than £500. Well done to all involved, especially the Ramsey Young Farmers who acted as stewards.

This summer I launched my campaign to encourage councils to make use of enforcement powers to clear up derelict and abandoned buildings in and around Fenland. I have been petitioning decision makers in Fenland and across the county to keep up to date registers of dilapidated or derelict buildings that are blighting town centres and to use the powers available to them to fine landlords who fail to act.

With the parliamentary session back in full swing after a busy summer in the constituency I have had the opportunity to participate in a number of important debates as well as more detailed legislative scrutiny as a member of the Crime and Antisocial Behaviour Bill Committee. I took the opportunity to call for greater powers to tackle anti social behaviour.

I continue to campaign on a number of issues, ranging from transparency in the NHS to better broadband in rural areas, and encourage residents with any concerns or comments to visit for further news on my work in North East Cambridgeshire and in Parliament.
